National Byway Award Winners
Byway Enhancement Award – Kentucky Great River Road – All-American Road
The project, led by the KYGGRO and funded by American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA)from the Kentucky Department of Tourism, added clear, attractive signs that help travelers navigate the scenic route while highlighting important destinations. The updated signs feature large, easy-to-read fonts and a design inspired by the Mississippi River itself.
“This project is all about making it easier for visitors to find their way and to discover more while they’re here,” said Lindsay Bowles, Executive Director of the KYGGRO. “When people feel confident exploring, they stay longer, spend more, and come back again.” The initiative builds on the foundational work of former Director Norma Pruitt, who began the original signage program.
Local cities helped shape the final design and placement of the signs, and the Discovery Park of America in neighboring Tennessee also contributed funding to ensure visitors could easily find their location along the route.

Case Studies Available (2020-2025)
The National Scenic Byway Association (NSBA) publishes case studies of its award winners to share best practices within the scenic byways community. These annual awards recognize excellence in categories such as byway enhancement, communications, interpretation, leveraging resources, and visitor experience. By providing detailed examples of successful projects, the association helps other byways nationwide to improve their programs.

2026 Awards
Next year, we encourage you to nominate a byway for one of our 8 National Awards for 2026. The application is typically due in February and the winners are announced in April. Applicants must be NSBA members.
