Florida’s Historic Coast: A Journey Along the A1A Scenic & Historic Coastal Byway

Few roads tell a story as rich and compelling as the A1A Scenic & Historic Coastal Byway in Florida. This 72-mile stretch of two-lane road, designated as an All-American Road in 2021, winds its way along a narrow barrier island between the Atlantic Ocean and Intracoastal Waterway. This byway is a journey through American history, natural beauty, and a captivating coastal culture you won’t forget.

A Road Through Time

The  A1A coastal byway is full of history, offering a rare glimpse of the earliest chapters of America, like the European settlement. The byway runs through St.Augustine, the nation’s oldest continuously occupied European-established city in the U.S., founded in 1565. As you travel the byway, you’re on a route that has been a huge part of American history for over 500 years.

The byway is a living museum, connecting travelers to historic sites like Castillo de San Marcos, a 17th-century Spanish stone fortress, and the St.Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum. Each stop gives a look into the people and events that shaped Florida’s history.

Coastal Beauty at Every Turn

From the moment you begin driving the A1A coastal byway, you are greeted with stunning views you’ll see the whole 72-mile drive. Travelers will pass pristine beaches with unique coquina sand, vast salt marshes, and maritime forests. The byway is a visual delight filled with amazing views of turquoise water, rolling dunes, and wide sandy beaches.

Along the way, travelers can stop to enjoy seaside parks, pristine nature preserves, and countless access points to get their toes in the sand. A great stop for nature lovers is the Guana Tolomato Matanzas (GTM) National Estuarine Research Preserve. This 75,761- acre area is dedicated to protecting, studying, and spreading awareness about the coastal and estuarine ecosystems found in Northeast Florida. The Washington Oaks Gardens State Park allows visitors to explore and learn about the Coquina rock formations.

Coastal Communities and Culture

The byway offers amazing views and rich history, but you should also explore the vibrant communities that line the coast. Each town along the route offers a different expression of Florida’s coastal lifestyle, from historic towns to laid-back beach villages.

One beloved small town along the byway is Flagler Beach, where a wooden fishing pier stretches into the Atlantic. Surfers ride the waves, and local shops and cafes invite visitors to stay awhile. The byway also runs through Ormond Beach, known as the “birthplace of speed” due to its rich racing history, where visitors can enjoy a blend of historic charm, artsy boutiques, and beachfront parks.
