The gorgeous formal, always blooming Bellingrath Gardens in Mobile, Alabama, a major attraction on Alabama’s Coastal Connection Scenic Byway, had rather humble beginnings. When Walter Bellingrath arrived in southern Alabama to manage his newly acquired Coca-Cola franchise in 1903, he purchased a rather rundown fishing camp renamed Belle Camp. After he married his former secretary Bessie Mae Morse, and became increasingly prosperous through multiple businesses, they began to travel widely. Inspired by the beautiful gardens found throughout Europe, the Bellingrath’s came home to transform Belle Camp into the gardens you see today, which opened in 1934. They continued to enhance the property, adding a home, a sculpture collection throughout the gardens and plantings which bloom year-round.
