As the nation prepares to commemorate America 250 and Colorado marks its 150th year of statehood, there’s no better way to celebrate than by exploring the landscapes, stories, and communities that define the Centennial State. Colorado’s Great American Road Trip—a signature 2026 campaign—invites travelers to rediscover the state through its 26 Scenic and Historic Byways, each one a gateway into Colorado’s rich heritage and breathtaking beauty.
These byways are more than picturesque drives. They are lifelines for rural communities, cultural corridors that preserve Colorado’s identity, and economic engines generating billions in tourism revenue. From the dramatic peaks of the San Juan Skyway to the quiet grasslands along the Pawnee Pioneer Trails, each route offers a unique blend of history, adventure, and natural wonder.
History-Infused Journeys
To honor this milestone year, the campaign will feature a dynamic mix of storytelling and travel inspiration. Travelers can dive into 26 full-length road trip itineraries—each paired with a concise promotional guide designed for easy exploration now and for years to come. HeidiTown will create themed blogs to spotlight everything from EV-friendly byways, junior ranger stops to wildlife viewing, museums, farms and more gems along the routes. The Colorado Byways is teaming up with American Road Magazine with a full page advertorial and special podcasts, while highlighting the byways in the Colorado’s Veterans Life Magazine, a special local connection to service and sacrifice.
Visitor Experience Via Mobile Apps & Photo Exhibit
Adding to the momentum, ten of our Colorado Byways have a new TravelStorys app for road trippers to explore. For art enthusiasts, the Colorado Byways Traveling Exhibit will continue showcasing stunning photography from across the state, bringing the Byways’ intrinsic values to audiences statewide.
Stewardship & More
Behind the scenes, CDOT continues its stewardship of these treasured corridors. The newly developed Colorado Scenic and Historic Byway Design Guidelines ensure that as the state grows, the character, safety, and mobility of these routes remain protected.
In 2026, the road tells Colorado’s story. All you have to do is follow it. Visit ColoradoByways.org.
