The Delaware Bayshore Scenic Byway: A Journey Along the Delaware Coastline

Looking for a journey along the Delaware coastline? The Delaware Bayshore Scenic Byway is the perfect route due to 100 miles out of the 157 miles covering the Delaware shoreline. Following the shores of the Delaware Bay and River, the byway connects travelers with charming small towns, wildlife-rich refuges, and some of the state’s most important historic sites.

Historical Sites Along the Route

The Delaware Bayshore Byway spans miles throughout the state of Delaware and offers plenty of historical stops that showcase the state’s deep-rooted history. Starting in New Castle, visitors can explore the oldest continuously occupied town in the Delaware Valley. Centered on its exceptionally well-preserved historic downtown, travelers are invited to stroll the cobblestone streets filled with colonial architecture and historic sites like the Dutch House and Old New Castle Court House.

Maritime heritage plays an important role along the route as well. Ports and lighthouses recall the days when the Delaware Bay was a bustling center for trade and navigation. Travelers can see one of Delaware’s oldest lighthouses, the Delaware Breakwater Lighthouse. Museums and interpretive centers share stories of shipbuilding, oystering, and crabbing – industries that helped shape the region’s culture. The Delaware Bay Museum invites visitors to immerse themselves in the history of the oyster industry in the 1920s and explore the facility, located in the historic oyster shipping sheds and wharves.

Scenic Beauty of the Bayshore

The byway winds through one of the East Coast’s most remarkable coastal landscapes. Wide open skies stretch above tidal marshes, meadows, and waterways, creating a backdrop that shifts with the light of day and rhythm of the tides.

Each season brings its own beauty. Spring brings in the vibrant colors of blooming wildflowers across Delaware, while summer offers lush green marshes and sparkling waterways. As the air begins to cool and the fall season spreads throughout Delaware, joyous festivals, delicious bites, and outdoor fun come to life. Finally, winter reveals the beauty of the season through cooled-down coastal towns, picturesque outdoors, and local cuisine that is sure to warm you up.

Nature and Outdoor Adventures

For nature lovers, the Delaware Bayshore byway is a paradise of outdoor discovery. The route passes through the Delaware National Estuarine Research Reserve, whose goal is to establish, protect, and manage natural estuarine habitats like tidal marshes, mudflats, and coastal forests. The reserve is also a critical stop on the Atlantic Flyway for migratory birds.

Travelers can also visit the Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge, which protects one of the largest remaining expanses of tidal salt marshes in the mid-Atlantic region. It’s mostly marsh but includes freshwater impoundments and upland habitats that are managed for migratory birds and other wildlife. Nearby, the Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge protects more than 10,000 acres of valuable habitat for wildlife of all kinds. The refuge includes activities like hunting, fishing, wildlife watching, as well as ranger programs, and is also home to 10 walking trails and 1 boating/kayak option.
