Welcome to the Katahdin Woods & Waters National Scenic Byway
Stretching across northern Maine, the Katahdin Woods & Waters National Scenic Byway invites travelers to slow down—and sometimes speed up—to experience one of New England’s most scenic, remote, and adventure-rich landscapes. This 89-mile journey winds through forests, rivers, lakes, and welcoming rural communities, offering a true four-season Maine experience shaped by nature, heritage, and outdoor recreation.
Anchoring the Byway is the unmistakable presence of Mount Katahdin, Maine’s highest peak and a dramatic focal point in every season. In summer, Katahdin’s rugged silhouette inspires hikers and paddlers; in fall, it rises above a sea of blazing foliage; in winter, it becomes a snow-covered icon beneath crisp blue skies; and in spring, it signals the return of rushing rivers and renewed adventure.
The Byway serves as a gateway to two of Maine’s most celebrated protected landscapes: Baxter State Park and Katahdin Woods & Waters National Monument. Baxter State Park offers legendary hiking, wildlife viewing, backcountry camping, and access to the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail. Just beyond, the National Monument provides vast, uncrowded terrain for hiking, paddling, biking, and world-class stargazing under some of the darkest night skies in the Northeast.
For those seeking adrenaline, the region delivers year-round thrills. Whitewater rafting on nearby rivers offers heart-pounding spring and summer adventures, while extensive ATV trail networks connect communities and backcountry landscapes throughout the warmer months. When winter arrives, the Byway transforms into a snow-lover’s playground, with miles of groomed snowmobile trails and peaceful routes for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing through forests and along frozen waterways.
The route passes through the gateway community of Millinocket, where visitors will find lodging, dining, outfitters, and easy access to trails and waterways. Millinocket blends outdoor adventure with a growing arts and culture scene, seasonal festivals, and year-round recreation. Nearby East Millinocket and surrounding towns add more access points to rivers, lakes, and scenic viewpoints.
Further along the Byway, Patten offers a cultural highlight at the Patten Lumbermen’s Museum, where the region’s logging heritage comes alive through historic buildings, exhibits, and seasonal events.
Autumn brings spectacular fall foliage drives, drawing visitors to experience fiery reds, oranges, and golds reflected in lakes and rivers. Wildlife viewing is exceptional year-round, with frequent sightings of moose, bald eagles, and other native species, especially at dawn and dusk.
Whether you’re chasing fall color, paddling wild rivers, riding ATV and snowmobile trails, skiing quiet forests, or simply enjoying a scenic drive through authentic Maine communities, the Katahdin Woods & Waters National Scenic Byway offers a four-season journey filled with adventure, beauty, and a deep sense of place.
