Stretching 188 miles, this scenic byway shows travelers the unique cultures, diverse people and customs, along with art, music, and food that are all inspired by the river.
A Byway With Rich History
The Ohio River is one of the nation’s most historic rivers. As you travel the byway, you’ll find unique communities and multiple historic sites that tell the stories of Native Americans, Lewis and Clark, civil war heroes, and so much more. Before European settlers, Native American tribes lived along the river, leaving behind burial mounds and archeological sites. There are centuries of history along the Ohio River.
At the tip of Illinois, where the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers meet, you’ll find the city of Cairo. The city was a bustling river port and also played a notable role during the Civil War as a Union supply base and strategic military site. Today, Fort Defiance State Park lets travelers stand at the exact point where the two rivers meet. It also has bridges that lead to Kentucky over the Ohio River and to Missouri over the Mississippi River.
Towns That Tell a Story
As you move north along the byway, you’ll stumble across a series of charming small towns full of history. Metropolis, most commonly known for being the “Home of Superman,” invites travelers with its larger-than-life statue of Superman in Superman Square, as well as the Lois Lane Statue. Before its playful scenery change, this was once a strategic port and industrial hub.
Farther along, Golconda charms visitors with its rich history and special attractions. 19th-century architectural features on the buildings take you back to the days of extensive river trade throughout the region. In Rosiclare, you can explore the history of the Fluorspar mining industry that once flourished here.
Natural Beauty at Every Turn
One of the byway’s best features is its scenic beauty along the route. In Southern Illinois, Shawnee National Forest spans 280,000 acres through oak forests, flourishing wetlands, grassy open lands, lush canyons, and sheer bluffs. A short detour off the main route leads you to Garden of the Gods, which features ancient sandstone rock formations and panoramic views.
You can also find Cave-in-Rock State Park by traveling the byway. The park is atop the high bluffs overlooking the scenic Ohio River. The wooded park is named after the 55-foot-wide cave that was carved out of the limestone rock by water thousands of years ago.
