Rolling Hills, Rustic Roads, and Rich History: Take the Scenic Route Through Western New York’s Southtowns

Western New York Southtowns Scenic Byway

Tucked away in the rolling hills and wooded landscapes just south of Buffalo, the Western New York Southtowns Scenic Byway offers a captivating journey through the beautiful countryside. Looping 108-miles, this byway takes travelers on a memorable ride along US Route 219, through charming towns and villages, historic landmarks, and breathtaking views.

A Byway Full of Character

This scenic route winds through the “Southtowns,” which is a term used by locals to describe the rural towns and villages nestled in the southern part of Erie County. The byway runs through the towns of Orchard Park (home of the NFL’s Buffalo Bills) and Aurora and goes south through Boston, Colden, and Concord, then down to Ellicottville to end the route.

Along the way, drivers can discover the quaint villages of East Aurora, home to the Roycroft Campus– a national historic landmark known to be the birthplace of the Arts and Crafts movement in America. The Village of Springville is the home of Glenn “Pop” Warner, the father of Pee Wee football. Stroll the historic streets of these Byway villages and explore unique artisan shops and galleries.

Nature at Its Best

The Southtowns are renowned for their rolling hills, deep forests, and seasonal beauty. Fall colors paint the landscape in warm reds and golds, while winter blankets the region in crisp white snow, perfect for skiing and snowshoeing. Visit Chesnut Ridge Park to take in panoramic views and the famous Eternal Flame, and enjoy outdoor activities during every season.

Outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy side trips to Zoar Valley—known for its dramatic cliffs and scenic hiking trails—and to Sprague Brook Park, a popular destination for hiking, mountain biking, camping, and fishing.

History, Heart, and Hometown Pride

Beyond its scenic beauty, the Southtowns region offers a strong sense of history and community spirit. Each town and village along the route is filled with its own unique stories. History buffs can explore sites like the Springville Center for the Arts, the Jolls House in Orchard Park, or the Concord Historical Society museum.

The Southtowns are home to vibrant traditions and hometown celebrations. Seasonal festivals, farmers markets, and town fairs are a cornerstone of life here. These events aren’t just entertaining; they reflect a genuine sense of togetherness and pride that defines life in the Southtowns.
