The Illinois Lincoln Highway Coalition (ILHC) is deeply honored to be a recipient of this year’s Annual Illinois Alliance for Arts Education (IAAE) Public/Community Service Award. The ILHC was recognized for their Illinois Lincoln Highway Interpretive Mural Series.
This award is given to various individuals and organizations throughout the state for their dedicated service and or promotion of the arts in Illinois.

The IAAE Awards ceremony was held March 20, 2014 at the Executive Mansion in Springfield Illinois as part of this year’s Arts Education Week celebrated during the week of March 16-21.  Awards were presented for outstanding service to the field of arts education in the following categories: Artist, Arts Educator, Arts Exemplar, IAAE Organization, Industry, Public/Community Service, School Administration and Schools of Distinction in Arts Education.

The Illinois Alliance for Arts Education is organized exclusively for charitable, educational, or scientific purposes. The organization advocates for educational change and creates public awareness of the importance of arts education by conducting promotional activities.  The organization provides leadership development through conferences, publications and resource materials for arts educators, classroom teachers, artists as well as community representatives in the areas of curriculum and assessment. The Illinois Arts Alliance for Education is a member of the Kennedy Center Alliance for Arts Education Network and partially supported by the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency. As the designated Scenic Byway management agency overseeing the Lincoln Highway National Scenic Byway, the ILHC continually seeks ways to recognize the significance of the highway and make the historic stories come to life for visitors.  After receiving a National Scenic Byway Grant from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and an Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, Office of Tourism, Attraction Development (TAP) Grant, The ILHC worked with the artist, Jay Allen owner of ShawCraft Sign Company, to create the Interpretive Mural Series.
35 murals were created and installed in over two dozen communities. Every mural is a hand-painted, unique work of art, valued at $10,000.00 each. The mural series is one of the largest works of public art in the country.
