385 – Gold Rush Byway

Overview

This route, between Chadron and Sidney on US 385, travels past Courthouse and Jail Rocks. These formations, towering 24 feet above Pumpkin Creek, have shown the way for early travelers and today’s visitors alike. Allow time for the Museum of Fur Trade and shop for locally made Native American goods at Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center in Chadron. Hike in the Chadron State Park. Continue to learn the history of the area at Dobby’s Frontier Town in Alliance with its homesteader and bootleggers’ cabins. A “must-see” is Carhenge outside Alliance with 39 vintage cars replicating the extraordinary and historic Stonehenge.
