Overview
This byway tells the 700-year story of Hawaii’s “alli” or ruling class on the island of Hawaii and takes you past four of Kona’s seven “Royal Centers” that were chosen for their abundance of natural resources and reserved exclusively for use by Hawaii’s kings and queens. Visitors will see Hulihee Palace, one of three palaces in the United States, royal surfing grounds at Kahaluu; Hawaii’s oldest Christian Church; and several sites of sacred Hawaiian Temples. The route travels from Historic Kailua Village through Keauhou and may be traveled by car, bike, or on foot
