Altamaha Historic Scenic Byway

Overview

The Altamaha Historic Scenic Byway travels from the Sapelo Island Visitors Center to the Needwood Church and School on State Route 99 and US 17. Explore the cultural heritage of the area beginning with the Guale Indians to the Spanish Missionaries, to the Scottish Highland soldiers and colonists, to the rice and cotton plantations that followed. Diverse marsh ecosystems line the route along Georgia’s coast as it is framed by the Darien waterfront, broad marsh views, and regal Live Oaks draped with Spanish Moss.
