Overview

This byway travels through the Garnet Mountain Range in western Montana, starting 30 miles east of Missoula where the Garnet Range Road leaves State Highway 200. Climbing 2,000 feet into the evergreens of the Garnet Mountains, enjoy the sweeping views of the Blackfoot River Valley, the Swan Range, the Mission Mountains, and the Bob Marshall Wilderness. Opportunities abound for fishing, hunting, camping, prospecting, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, hiking, and horseback riding. A must see is Garnet Ghost Town, Montana’s best preserved ghost town. Over a hundred years ago the town was the home to 1,000 people, including gold miners and their families. This seasonal road is groomed by the Bureau of Land Management for snowmobiling from Jan 1 to April 30.
