General Israel Putnam Memorial Highway

Route 169, also known as Canterbury Rd in Brooklyn, is named for General Israel Putnam, an American Army General who fought with distinction at the Battle of Bunker Hill during the American Revolutionary War. He is buried in Brooklyn. A monument provides a home for is remains and a plaque on a bolder mark the site of his farm and tavern. The winter encampment he died in is now a state park named for him. The town of Putnam, to the north, is also named for him as well as several counties.
