Lake Valley Back Country Byway

Overview

Deep in the heart of mineral-rich Black Range Mountains, this byway travels through shady, tree-lined streets. Many places in New Mexico became ghost towns and today are being repopulated. But Lake Valley is a true ghost town as the last of its residents moved to Deming in 1994. Eastward to Nutt, see the remains of the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe rail line that once brought supplies to Lake Valley and carried ore out. The tracks were removed in 1934, but the grade is still visible.
