Overview

Central Idaho was a bustling mining area in the 1800s, but now is peppered with ghost towns. Travel this byway and learn about mining operations or even try you hand at panning for gold. Stop at the interpretive center in Challis to see the many mining exhibits and the area where you can pan for gold. The town of Stanley is surrounded by the Sawtooth, White Cloud, and Lost River Mountain Ranges making it a picturesque location with breathtaking views. The area offers fishing, hiking, whitewater rafting, mountain biking, camping, and star gazing.
