Overview
Pioneers crossed towering formations and pine-shaded bluffs on what is now US 26 and State 92 from the Wyoming border to Ogallala. The dramatic bluffs, diverse wildlife, and gorgeous waterfalls can be seen at Niobrara Scenic River, Gering-Wildcat Hills State Recreation Area, and along the North Platte River. Stop at the Scotts Bluff National Monument and look for pioneer wagon ruts and historical markers at Mitchell Pass Bayard-Chimney Rock National Historic Site. Don’t forget the hiking gear and camera! North of Oshkosh, visit the Crescent Lake National Wildlife Refuge, especially in mid-May and October as sighting the many species of birds peak at those times. Bring the binoculars! Allow time at Lake McConaughy and Lake Ogallala State Recreation Area for fishing, swimming, and shoreline hikes.
