Wild Rivers Back Country Byway

Overview

Named for the Red River and Rio Grande which both carved their way through the landscape, this byway gives access for hikers, cyclists, wildlife viewers, fishermen, and sightseers. The La Junta Overlook has a panoramic view of the confluence of the Red River and the Rio Grande River some 800 feet below. Several trails reach the gorge below for backcountry campers and fisherman as they enjoy the tall ponderosa pines. The upper reaches of the Rio Grande offer kayaking and white-water rafting in snow abundant years. Boating in the Wild Rivers Recreation Area is hazardous and requires a permit. Stop at the Wild Rivers Visitors Center and learn more about the area, its topography, and its history.
