National Byway Award Winner
Partnership Award – Mohawk Towpath National Scenic Byway
Last Spring the Byway played host to a Road Rally — a unique partnership between the Mohawk Towpath Scenic Byway Coalition, the Friends of the Mohawk Towpath Byway, the Mohawk Hudson Chapter of the Sports Car Club of America (MoHud), and local Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) volunteers. Together, they created a one-of-a-kind driving experience that introduces participants to the byway’s scenic beauty and rich history.
Starting at the Historic Grooms Tavern and ending at the Historic Mabee Farm in Schenectady, the rally took participants along a scenic route that highlights key landmarks of the Erie Canal, both past and present. With a detailed route book, GPS directions, and historical clues, each team sets out to discover hidden stories that shaped New York’s canal corridor.
“We wanted to share the history of the Erie Canal in a fun, interactive way,” said Eric Hamilton, event organizer. “The rally gave people a reason to explore, learn, and then come back with friends and family.”

Case Studies Available (2020-2025)
The National Scenic Byway Association (NSBA) publishes case studies of its award winners to share best practices within the scenic byways community. These annual awards recognize excellence in categories such as byway enhancement, communications, interpretation, leveraging resources, and visitor experience. By providing detailed examples of successful projects, the association helps other byways nationwide to improve their programs.

2026 Awards
Next year, we encourage you to nominate a byway for one of our 8 National Awards for 2026. The application is typically due in February and the winners are announced in April. Applicants must be NSBA members.
