Discover the Florida Keys Scenic Highway
Stretching 110 miles, surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico, the Florida Keys Scenic Highway is a journey through America’s most breathtaking coastal escapes. Designated as Florida’s only All-American Road, the scenic byway winds through coastal towns offering views of turquoise water, historic landmarks, and a culture you will only find in the Florida Keys.
A One-of-a-Kind Drive Across the Sea
The Florida Keys Scenic Highway follows U.S. 1 across 42 bridges that lead you to each unique key. Often referred to as the “Highway that goes to sea,” you won’t find another highway where the sea and horizon look infinite.
One of the highlights of the journey is the Seven Mile Bridge, one of the longest bridges in America. The bridge connects Knights Keys in the middle keys to Little Duck in the lower keys. The waters surrounding the bridge are home to vibrant marine life like sea turtles, dolphins, manatees, and so much more.
Unforgettable Stops Along the Way
The stops along the byway invite travelers to experience a variety of activities. In Key Largo, visitors can explore the stunning coral reefs of John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, the country’s first undersea park. From glass-bottom boat tours and kayaking to scuba diving and snorkeling, there are so many ways to experience the park.
In Marathon, you’ll find attractions like the Turtle Hospital, where rescued sea turtles are rehabilitated before returning to the wild, and Crane Point Hammock, a natural and cultural heritage site with nature trails and historic structures. Nature lovers should stop in Big Pine Key for a wild and relaxing experience. It is home to Bahia Honda State Park and National Key Deer Refuge.
Heritage and Culture
The Florida Keys Scenic Highway doesn’t offer just scenic beauty; it takes you through history and culture. The region’s story is told through its historic lighthouses, shipwreck sites, and abandoned railroad bridges from Henry Flagler’s Overseas Railroad. It is also home to marine sanctuaries, heritage trails, and interpretive centers that highlight the importance of the communities that call this place home.
The island culture is a vibrant blend of Caribbean, Cuban, Bahamian, and American influences. From conch fritters and Cuban sandwiches to key lime pie and island rum drinks, the food tells a flavorful story of heritage and tradition. The laid-back atmosphere, often accompanied by live music, open-air cafes, and flip-flop-friendly bars, invites visitors to slow their pace and embrace “island time.”
