As the Tennessee River was dammed to create Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley, a beautiful 170,000-acre outdoor playground, emerged to become the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area. The 43-mile Woodlands Trace Scenic Byway is the scenic drive that traverses the area from top to bottom.  Blossoming trees and flowers cover the area in the spring.  The summer canopy of greenery transforms into brilliant fall foliage and an open view in winter. When exploring the area, you’ll discover forest hiking trails, lakeside trails, splendid waterways, picturesque bays, Civil War sites, quiet ponds, scenic views and more. Visit the Woodlands Nature Station, 1850s Homeplace Working Farm, the Golden Pond Visitor Center and Planetarium and the 700-acre Elk and Bison Prairie.
