Chan SanSan Scenic Backway

Overview

Over 12,000 years ago glacial melt formed the James River Valley. When travelers descend into the valley, they can see the panoramic view of a winding river surrounded by tall grass prairie and wildflowers. This area is rich in Native American history, earthen mounds, early settlement and scenic beauty. Visitors have multiple opportunities for recreation and wildlife viewing along the backway.
